Research Hints and Documents

High school and college papers generally must follow writing guidelines which dictate everything from margins, to font size and style, to use of quotations, to proper location of page numbers, to parenthetical documentation and the correct format of the works cited entries.

The three most common guidelines are:

MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers- this is the one we use and is used by the vast majority of colleges and universities especially in English departments.

Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (also called APA style)- used by many colleges and universities especially in the social science departments; some professors will require MLA in a college while others will require APA in the same college.

Chicago Manual of Style- mostly used by book publishers, there are some journalists who prefer this style
